Hubble's discovery

Edwin hubble was the first astronomer to discover other galaxies

He noticed that galaxies move away from each other

Hubble's proposal

1) The universe is expanding in all directions

2) All galaxies have taken the same amount of time to reach present positions

3) Farther galaxies seem to move away at faster rate

Raisin Bread Analogy

As the dough (universe) expands, the distance between all the raisins (galaxies) increases

Evidence of Expanding Universe

Red shift - electromagnetic waves of galaxies get streched out and shirt toward the red end of spectrum as they travel away from galaxies

Big Band Theory

13.7 billion years ago an ifintely small volume of space suddenly and rapidly expended to immense size

before this there was no energy or matter

ever since has been expanding and cooling

Evidence of Big Bang

1) galaxies are moving away from each other

2) cosmic background rotation left over from BB first detected in 1960 by radio telescope

3) Satellites and space probs have mapped out radition

Galaxy

Collection of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity

about 125 billion galaxies

Milky way has about 100 billion stars

Spiral Galaxy

Barred Galaxy

Ellipital Galaxy

Irregular Galaxy

Star Cluster

group of stars found within galaxies

Globular Cluster

collection of stars up to 1 million stars held together in circle shape

Open Cluster

Up to ten thousands of stars
