Aesthetics
The study or theory of beauty and our responses to it; the branch of philosophy that deals with art-- its creation, form, and effects-- derived from the Greek word relating to perception.
American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)
An organization formed in 1975 by the merger of the American Institute of Decorators (AID) and the National Society of Interior Designers.
Assisted Living
A residence within a larger facility for persons who require help with activities of daily living, often seniors.
Continuing Education Unit (CEU)
An accredited unit (generally on hour per week) assigned to professional education programs often required for interior design and other professional practitioners, post formal academic training.
Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)
An approach to accommodate varying needs, generally of an elderly population, in a clustered environment to ease transition from independence to a more supervised facility. It generally incorporates the categories of independent living, assisted living, and specialized nursing or dementia units.
Contract (Commercial) Interior Design
A category of design in which a company, rather than individuals, is contracting for the services; also called commercial design. Within this broad category are several subspecializations, including office design, hospitality design, retail design, health-care design, and facilities management.
Council for Interior Design Association (CIDA)
Association that has been formed to advance education and practice standards. The association reviews educational programs against established criteria in order to accredit the programs accordingly. CIDA is and independent, volunteer organization that sets standards for interior design programs, culminating in a minimum of a bachelor's degree at the postsecondary level in the United States and Canada.
Evidence-Based Design
A process of design based on extensive methodical research to achieve an expected outcome; originating from the field of medicine, it is applied to health-care design and to other types of built environment design.
Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI)
An organization that provides independent oversight of professional credentialing and project certification programs related to green building design.
Guild
A type of organization that has its heyday in feudal society in the 13th century, in which members practiced a craft associated with a similar pursuit, advancing from apprentice to master artisan.
Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC)
An organization primarily composed of college educators and researchers in the field of interior design. IDEC's mission is the advancement of interior design education and scholarship by promoting recognition of the contribution of interior design education, scholarship, and practice to the advancement of quality of life within the build environment.
Interior Architect
A term used, especially in Europe, to describe the occupation taken up by several 18th century men who employed cabinetmakers, painters, and sculptors to execute their designs for interiors.
Interior Decoration
Decoration on an interior through ornamentation that enhances the space, adds to its individuality , and may provide psychological and symbolic comforts, but is not required to meet the most basic universal human needs of safety and protection.
Interior Decorator
An individual who works only with surface decoration, such as paints, fabrics and furnishings.
Interior Design
The panning and design or architectural interiors and their furnishings, including the necessities of the space relating to issues of safety and protection. As a specialty profession, it began to develop separately from architecture in the 18th century.
Interior Designer
An individual who works both in interior architecture and the furnishings of a space and whose preparation for the profession includes education and/or certification.
International Interior Design Association (IIDA)
An international organization founded in 1994 to represent interior designers worldwide and created by the merger of the Institute of Business Design (IBD), the International Society of Interior Designers (ISID), and the Council of Federal Interior Designers (CFID).
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
An internationally recognized voluntary green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to establish a variety of rating systems for the residential and commercial building and construction industries.
National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD)
Organization that reviews college level education programs in the fields of art and design against established criteria in order to accredit programs accordingly.
National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ)
An organization that serves to identify those interior designers who have met the minimum standards for professional practice by passing an examination. NCIDQ continually updates the examination to reflect expanding professional knowledge and design development techniques.
Residential Interior Design
A category of design that focuses on planning and specification or interior materials and products used in private residences.
Sustainable (Green) Design
Socially responsible design that considers the needs of future generations to preserve the natural environment and its resources.
Universal Design
Based on the distinct body of knowledge that relates to both human and design factors. This approach fosters opportunities for as many people as possible to have access to good design.
