What to consider when choosing design/ICT tools? |
- The tools that are available - Your experience with using the various tools - Whether the piece of software will work with the other pieces of software that you also need to use |
What are design/ICT techniques? |
The ways you use the design/ICT tools to solve problems. |
Ways of capturing data: |
- Paper forms - Websites - Other systems - Podcasts |
Problems with inaccurate data: |
- incorrect decisions being made resulting in loss of money - goods being sent to the wrong address - having to spend time sorting out mistakes - loss of goodwill and trust - being prosecuted under the Data Protection Act 1998. |
Verification |
Checking that the data being entered into the ICT system perfectly matches the source of the data. - proof reading - double entry of data |
Online entry of data |
- transcription errors - transposition errors |
Transcription errors |
- Misinterpretation - Typing mistakes - Problems with understanding speech - Poor handwriting - A caller not spelling out unusual words or names |
Transposition errors |
Mistake made when typing at high speed and involve the accidental swapping of characters. |
How to verify and validate content: |
- spellchecking - accuracy - readability - grammar checking - consistency of layout |
Validation |
A check performed by a computer program during data entry. The process which ensures that data accepted for processing is sensible and reasonable. |
Data type checks |
Check if the data being entered is the same type as the data type specified for the field. |
Presence checks |
Checks to make sure data has been entered into the field. |
Length checks |
Checks to make sure that the data being entered has the correct number of characters in it. |
File/Table lookups |
Used to make sure that codes being used are the same as those used in a table or file of codes. |
Cross field checks |
The data in more than one field often need to be checked together to make sure they make sense. |
Range checks |
Performed on numbers. Check that a number being entered is within a certain range. |
Format checks |
Performed on codes to make sure that they conform to the correct combinations of characters. |
In order to reduce errors it is best to: |
- reduce the amount of typed input to its minimum - allow a user to type in their details - allow a user to check their details -use as many validation and verification methods as possible. |
What data will be processed? |
- Images - Numbers - Text - Sound |
