Mesenchymal Cell

"Multi-potent" connective tissue cells. A type of "stem cell".

Collagen

A flexible connective protein cell.

Osteoid

Unmineralized "pre-bone" collagen.

Osteoblast

Specialized mesenchymal cell that deposits hydroxyapatite (calcium and phosphorus).

Osteocyte

An osteoblast that is surrounded and encased by its hydroxyapatite secretions.

Trabecula

A rod-shaped "strut" of bone. Part of the microscopic "framework" that will become the "spongy" looking parts of the bone.

Periosteum

Dense connective tissue surrounding bone.

Vascularized

Connected to blood vessels.

Lamellae

Overlapping rectangular "plates" of flat, compact bone.

Diploë

Gaps in the trabecular bone where red marrow forms.

Epiphysial Line

Indentation of lamellar bone at the point where epiphysis fused to diaphysis. Visible through periosteum for most of adulthood.
