Additive Inverse

The sum of an integer and it's Additive Inverse, or Opposite, is 0.

Zero Pairing
|
You pair up numbers that have a sum of 0. They are Additive Inverse, or Opposites.

Adding Integers with the same sign.

Add their Absolute Values and keep the sign.

Adding Integers with different signs.
|
Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign.
Subtract the lower absolute value from the higher absolute value. Keep the sign of the higher absolute value of the numbers in the addition problem. Make zero pairs until you run out of chips. The answer is the number of chips remaining and the sign of the answer is the color of the remaining chips. |
