How can biology be visualized?
Biology can be visualized as a hierarchy of units that include molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organisms, populations, communities, and the biosphere.
What is the central unit of study in biology?
The organism
What are the three domains that all organisms are separated into?
Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya
The domain Eukarya is divided into what four main kingdoms?
Fungi, plants, protists, animals
Each species is identified by what two names?
The first, the genus name, refers to a group of species that share a recent common ancestor. The second name, the species name, identifies a single species with the genus. For example, the scientific name of modern humans is Homo sapiens.
What are five parts to the Scientific Method?
Making observations
Asking questions
Forming hypotheses, or tentative answers to the questions
Making predictions based on these hypotheses
Testing the predictions by making additional observations or conducting experiments
If the results of continued testing support the hypothesis, it may come to be considered a what?
Theory
What happens if the results do not support a hypothesis?
It may be modified or abandoned

Most tests of hypotheses are of what two types?
Controlled experiments and The comparative method
What is the independent variable?
The variable being manipulated
What is the dependent variable?
The response that is measured
Biology is the scientific study of what?
Living things
What is life?
An organized genetic unit capable of metabolism, reproduction, and evolution
What are the characteristics of all living things?
Consist of one or more cells
Contain Genetic Information
Use Genetic Information to Reproduce themselves
Are Capable of Biological Evolution
Use Nutrients to Supply Energy to Build New Structures
Can regulate their internal environment
Interact With One Another
What is the basic unit of life?
Cells
What is evolution?
The combination of reproduction and errors in the duplication of the genetic material
The differences among living things that enable them to live in different kinds of environments and adopt different lifestyles are called what?
Adaptations
What is metabolism?
An organism’s total chemical activity and consists of thousands of individual chemical reactions
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of a relatively stable internal condition, such as temperature
