Scheduling Considerations
See school-aged children after school or on professional development days. High school students may have variable schedules. ■ A mother of school-aged children may prefer to come in while the children are at school, as long as she can be home for their return. ■ Clients with busy schedules and work-related commitments during the day may prefer appointments first thing in the morning before delays occur. ■ Older clients or those who take a great deal of time with the doctor might best be seen at the end of the morning or afternoon. ■ Never book an appointment for a pregnant woman back to back or even close in time with a client who may have rubella (German measles). Avoid even same-day bookings if you can. If a pregnant woman who is not immune to rubella contracts the disease, especially in the first trimester, the consequences to the unborn baby could be serious. If a child has symptoms suggesting rubella (rash, fever, crankiness) check your appointment scheduler to see if you have a prenatal appointment booked. ■ Clients with disabilities might depend on others to get them to and from the office and therefore may need special consideration regarding their appointment times. ■ Clients who need interpreters usually require a longer appointment. Schedule this at the end of the day or morning so that if the visit takes longer than expected other clients are not kept waiting.
common types of visits to a family physician

Minor assessments (usually limited and done quickly), 5–7 min.

■ “Talks” or counselling, 30–60 min.

Allergy shots/flu shots: often no appointment needed, especially if there is a nurse to give the injection .

■ Intermediate assessments (requiring moderate amount of time), 10 min.

Subsequent prenatal examinations, 10 min
