Beginning in 1905, the French government began drawing up laws regulating the origin and composition of wine, including boundaries to ensure provenance of products. They passed a law in 1911 outlining the boundaries of Champagne that excluded the Aube. The Aubois protested and the law was overturned as they were included. The growers of the Marne then revolted and ransacked cellars suspected of importing foreign grapes. A new bill was created to satisfy all the parties and the Aube was still included.
