Explain the rationale for the postwar policy of containment. Show how it was applied in the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and NATO?

Thesis: The postwar policies that President Harry Truman introduced, such as the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan, were all introduced to contain communism in Russia and prevent it from consuming the entire country. In essence, they were the first shots of the Cold War.

3) Identify the factors that produced the anti-communist “witch hunt” after World War II. List some of its most important short and long term consequences. Why was there such strong popular support for McCarthy's anti-communist crusade in the early 1950’s?

Thesis: Following WWII, the Cold War began and pitted the US against red Russia, which began to make Americans at home worry if there was communism growing among them. This led to the growth in popularity of McCarthyism and the suspicion and fear of communists and communist sympathizers; however, this quickly devolved into simple opposition to any agents of social and cultural change, which led to the disillusionment many had with America’s promise of fair and open democracy for decades.

4)Assess President Truman’s response to the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in 1950. Do you think that he acted properly with regard toa:the UN?c: his military commanders?

The United Nations- When the Korean volcano erupted in 1950, the UN was quick to respond with “police action”, and it required that all nations, including the US, provide support. In this regard, the US did much more than was required, as they provided 88% of contingents and the commander of the entire schtick, General MacArthur, received his orders from Truman, not the UN’s Security Council. In all, this probably was not a very smart move, since it got the US way too invested in the Korean War and would lead to the following point. His military commanders- MacArthur himself wanted to fight against the Koreans and go up the 38th parallel by any means necessary, and even use nuclear weapons; such actions would escalate tue already serious matter into an even bigger war. Thus, Truman was forced to remove his commander for being insubordinate, a move that garnered him many haters back home, and even branded by some as a communist. Truman’s choice, while clearly unpopular, was needed, as any escalation would lead to further fighting and maybe even another World War.
