What is matter?
anything that has mass and takes up space
What are the three levels of observing matter?
Macroscopic(viewable with the naked eye), Microscopic(viewable with the aided eye), particulate(too small to be seen by an microscope)
What is a model?
Something that is used to represent something too large or too small
What is the kinetic molecular theory?
the particles of matter are always moving. Kinetic means motion.
What are the three states of matter?
Gas, liquid, solid
What is a physical property of matter?
A property that can be observed and measured with a chemical change
What is a physical change?
change in form with no change in identity
What is chemical property?
the types of chemical change a substance is able to experience
What is a physical change?
change in form with no change in identity
What is a chemical change?
identity of original substance changes to something new

A change in which one or more substance disappear and one or more new substance form
What is a pure substance?
one chemical with distinct set of physical and chemical properties; cannot be separated by physical changes
What is a mixture?
two or more pure substances; properties vary, depending on the relative amounts of pure substances; components can be separated by physical changes
What is homogeneus matter?
same appearance, composition, properties throughout
What is a solution?
a homogenous mixture
What is heterogeneous matter?
different phases of the matter are visible, variable properties in different parts of sample
What is an element?
a pure substance, cannot be decomposed chemically into other pure substances
What is a compound?
pure substance that can be decomposed chemically into other pure substances
What is an elemental symbol? How is it written?
the letter that symbolize an element
What is a formula compound?
elemental symbols of elements in a compound with subscripts showing the number of atoms of each element
What is an atom?
the smallest unit particle of an element
What is a molecule?
the smallest unit particle of a pure substance that can exist independently and retain the identity of that substance
What is the law of electrostatic forces?
Objects with the same charges repel each other
Objects with opposite charges attract each other
What is an exothermic change?
a change in which energy is release, usually in the form of heat
What is an endothermic change?
a change in which energy is absorbed, usually in the form of heat
What is potential energy?
energy because of position in force field.
What is the Conservation Law?
mass can be changed to energy
total mass plus energy is constant
What is the law of conservation of mass?
mass conserved in chemical change neither created or destroyed
What is the law of conservation of energy?
energy is conserved in ordinary change, neither created or destroyed
