Abnormal activation of the proteins involved in blood coagulation, causing small blood clots to form in vessels and cutting of the supply of oxygen to distal tissues

graft rejection

Proess in which a recipient's immune sytem attacks a transplanted organ or tissue

graft-vs-host disease

Complication that occurs following a stem cell or bone marrow transplant in which the transplant produces antibodies against recipient's organs that can be severe enough to cause death

hematoma

localized accumulation of blood, usually clotted in an organ, space or tissue due to a bread in or severing of a blood vessel

hemoglobinopathy

Any disorder caused by abnormalities in the hemoglobin molecule

lymphadenopathy

Any disease of the lymph nodes

lymphedema

swelling primarily in a single arm or leg, due to an accumulation of lyph withing tissues caused by obstruction or disease in the lymph vessels

multiple myeloma

Malignant tumor of plasma cells, (cells that help the body fight infection by producing antibodies) in the bone marrow

sepsis

Presence of bacteria or their toxins in the blood; also called septicemia or blood poisoning

systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

Widespread autoimmune disease that may affect the skin, brain, kidneys and joints and causes chronic inflammation also called discoid lupus if the symptoms are limited to the skin

thrombocythemia

Overproduction of platelets, leading to thrombosis or bleeding disordes due to platelets malformation.

thrombocytopenia

Abnormal decrease in platelets caused by low production of platelets in the bond emarrow or increased destruction of platelets in the blood vessels (intravacular) spleen or liver (EXTRavascular)

von willebrand disease

Bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency of von Willebrand factor, a sticky proteing that lines blood vessels and reacts with platelets to form a plug that leads to clot formation.

Anemia

Deficiency of erythocyts or hemoglobin in th blood. It is not a disease but a symptom of other illnesses

iron deficiency anemia

lack of iron that is rquired for hemoglobin production

hemorrhagic anemia

excessive blood loss

hemolytic anemia

excessive blood cell destruction resulting in jaundice

aplastic anemia

decreased blood formation within bone marrow. Associated with bone marrow failure and resulting in erythropenia, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia

sick cell anemia

inherited anemia that causes RBC to become crescent or sickle shaped when oxygen levels are low

Pernicious anemia

Chronic anemia found in people older than age 50 due to lack of sufficient vitamin B12

folic acid

Inability to produce sufficient red blood cells due to the lack of folic acid, B vitamin

AIDS

infectious disease caused by the HIV virus which slowly destroys the immune system. Symptoms of Aids, swollen lymph glands, malaise, fever, night sweats, and weight loss

Kaposi sarcoma

a neoplastic disorder is associated with AIDS. Malignancy of connective tissue including bone, fat, muscle and fibrous tissue. tumors readily metastasize to other organs

Pneumocystis pneumonia

AIDS related disease

Allergy

an acquired abnormal immune reponse

Autoimmunity

is the failure of the body to distinguish accurtely between self and nonself

myasthenia gravis-

chronic, progressive autoimmune neuromuscular disease that affecs the voluntary muscles of the body causing sporadic weakness

Rheumatoid arthritis,

ex. of autoimmune disease

Hemophilia

hereditary disorder in which the blood clotting mechanism is impaired

hemarthrosis

blood enters joints. Associated with pain and maybe permanent deformity

Infectious munonucleosis

caused by the Epstein Barr virus EBV. Kissing disease. sore throat, fever and enlarge cervical lymph nodes. Anorexia, gingivitis, headach, tiredness.

leukemia

Overgrowht of blood cells. Malignant cells replace healthy bone marrow cells. Affects granulocytic myelogenous or lymphocytic cells.

Hodgkin disease

H Lymphoma- a malignant disease of the lymph system.
