Age equivalent
a very general score that is used to compare the performance of children at the same age with one another **these scores seem to be useful in presenting information but are misleading
chronological age
the child's actual age (years, months, and days)
Data
information gathered and collected during the assessment process
Deciles
division of scores into tenths or ten equal units. for example, the sixth decile is the point at which 60% of the scores fall below (division of the bell curve into ten deciles is common)
Grade equivalent
a very general score that is used to compare the performance of children in the same grade with one another **these scores seem to be useful in presenting information but are misleading
percentile rank
a score indicating the percentage of people or scores that occur at or below a given score. if you have a percentile rank of 75, this means that you did as well or better than 75% of the students in the class **major drawback to percentiles involves the unequal length of percentile units
Protocol
the booklet where responses and scores are recorded
Quartiles
division of scores into four quarters. the first quartile marks the lower quarter or bottom 1/4 of all scores (dividing bell curve into quartiles is common)
Raw score
the raw score indicates the number of items correctly answered on a given test. in all cases, it is the first score a teacher obtains when interpreting data. (i.e. 15 out of 20 words correct on spelling test)
Scaled scores
a conversion of a student's raw score on a test to a comparison scale that allows for a numerical comparison between students **most scaled scores have a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10
Standard score
a score that has been transformed to fit a normal curve, with a mean and standard deviation that remain the same across ages. **most standard scores have a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 (i.e. IQ test)
Stanine
an abbreviation for standard nines, it is a type of standard score that has a mean of 5 and a standard deviation of 2. scores range from 1 to 9. bell curve is divided into 9 stanines
t-scores
another way to express test performance. t-scores have a mean of 50 with a standard deviation of 10
z-score
indicates how many standard deviations a score is above or below the mean. A z-score is a standard score distribution with a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1.
THIS IS THE BELL CURVE WITH COMMON SCALING
see page in notebook. important to know though.
