In the present tense, German modals have two stems. . .
(i) one for infinitive and plural forms; (ii) one for the singular forms. [sollen is an exception - same stem in all forms]
In the present tense, German modals take (endings) ...
(i) no endings in the 1st and 3rd singular (using only the stem); (ii) normal endings in 2nd person sing. and all pl.

weak past tense endings to the past tense stem of the modal.
