The structures that are part of the Integumentary System. |
*Skin *Hair *Nails *Oil glands *Sweat glands *Sensory Receptors |
|
|
The 4 Functions of the Skin |
*Protection *Sensation *Regulation of Body Temperature *Manufacture of Vitamin D |
|
|
The 5 Types of Protection |
*Mechanical Barrier *Chemical Barrier *Disease Barrier *Water Barrier *Light Barrier |
|

The 3 Characteristics of Body Temp |
*Sweat Glands *Size of Blood Vessels *Fat Layer for Insulation |
|
|
Superficial Layer, composed of Stratified Squamous Epithelium. |
Epidermis |
2 Layers and Structures of the skin. |
|
Produce Keratin (tough, fibrous protein that helps protect the skin and underlying tissues from heat, water loss, microbes, and chemicals). |
Keratinocytes |
2 Layers and Structures of the skin. |
|
5 Layers of the Epidermis |
*Stratum Basale *Stratum Spinosum *Stratum Granulosum *Stratum Lucidum *Stratum Corneum |
|
|
1 Cell layer of Cuboidal or Columnar shaped cells. This layer has some Stem Cells that are Mitotically Active. |
Stratum Basale |
5 Layers of the Epidermis |
|
Pigment producing cells; make up 8% of the Epidermal cells; contributes to Skin color and protects cells from UV light. |
Melanocytes |
2 Cells that lie in the Stratum Basale |
|
Tactile Sensory Receptor |
Merkel Discs |
2 Cells that lie in the Stratum Basale |
|
8 to 10 cell layers thick. It gives Strength and Flexibility to the skin. Cells in the Superficial Layer become flattened. The Langerhan Cell is a Phagocytic Cell found in the layer. |
Stratum Spinosum |
5 Layers of the Epidermis |
|
3 to 5 cell layers thick. Cells that are under going Apoptosis (programmed cell death). There is a presence of Keratin and Lamellar Granules (which release Lipid rich secretions). |
Stratum Granulosum |
5 Layers of the Epidermis |
|
3 to 5 cell layers thick. Flattened, dead Keratinocytes that contain large amounts of Keratin. Only found in Thick Skin. |
Stratum Lucidum |
5 Layers of the Epidermis |
|
25 to 30 cell layers thick. Interior cells mostly Keratin, continuously shed and replaced. |
Stratum Corneum |
5 Layers of the Epidermis |
|
Abnormal thickening of the Stratum Corneum from being exposed to friction. |
Callus |
3 Types of Stratum Corneum |
|
The process by which cells accumulate Keratin as they move from the Deep Layers to the more Superficial Layers. |
Keratinization |
3 Types of Stratum Corneum |
|
Composed of Areolar CT and Dense Irregular CT. |
Dermis |
3 Types of Stratum Corneum |
|
Areolar C.T.; contain Dermal Papillae. |
Papillary Layer |
Two sublayers that make up the dermis |
|
Dense Irregular C.T.; contain Sweat and Oil Olands (Eccrine and Apocrine), Hair Follicles, Nerves. |
Reticular Layer |
Two sublayers that make up the dermis |
|
Not actually considered part of the skin; but a layer that lies below the skin, and connects the Dermis to the underlying muscle. |
Subcutaneous Layer (Hypodermis) |
|
|
Brownish-Blackish Pigment Color |
Melanin |
3 Types of Pigments |
|
Pinkish-Red Color, because the Pigment is carrying Oxygen, so it gives the skin, that color. |
Hemoglobin |
3 Types of Pigments |
|
Yellowish-Orange Pigment, precursor to Vit. A, accumulates in Stratum Corneum. |
Carotene |
3 Types of Pigments |
|
The structures are; On all skin surfaces except palms, palmar surface of fingers, soles, and plantar surfaces of toes. The functions are; Guards from injury to due sun exposure, foreign particles; in the nostrils, inhaling insects and foreign particles. |
Hair |
4 Appendages of the Skin |
|
The structures are; Connected to hair follicles; open directly onto the surface of the skin via a duct.
The functions are; Produce and secrete sebum which prevents the hair from drying out, prevents excessive evaporation of the water from the skin, keeps skin soft, inhibits bacteria growth. |
Oil Glands or Sebaceous Gland |
4 Appendages of the Skin |
|
The structures are: *Apocrine (only active after puberty; localized to areas such as the axillary and groin regions). *Eccrine (active throughout life and widespread throughout the body).
The functions are; Release Perspiration into the Hair Follicles or on the Skin. |
Sweat Gland or Sudiferous Glands. |
4 Appendages of the Skin |
|
The functions are; Grasp and Manipulate small objects. |
Nail |
4 Appendages of the Skin |
|
The ABCDE's Of Skin Cancer |
*Asymmetrical *Borders *Color *Diameter *Elevation |
