removal of a small piece of tissue for observation

Clinical Diagnosis

Diagnosis based on actual observations, diagnostic results, and symptoms

Manual Method

Test method done by hand rather than by machine

Range of values in which a test result should fall for most healthy individuals

Panel

Group of blood tests that evaluate the function of a particular body system

POL

Physician's office laboratory; a lab within the medical office

H&H

hematocrit and hemoglobin

Lytes

electrolytes

PTT

partial thromboplastin time

TSH

thyroid stimulating hormone

CLIA 1988

Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment; effective in 1992, mandates that all labs must use the same standards of testing regardless of location, type or size

Blod Bank

Section of lab where blood is collected, stored, and prepared for transfusion

Chemistry

Most automated area of lab; examples of routine tests include BUN and electrolytes

Coagulation

Subsection of hematology; evaluates the process of hemostasis

Cytology

Deals with the study of cells; part of the anatomical lab

Hematology

Study of blood

Histology

Study of tissue; performs tests on biopsies; part of the anatomical lab

Microbiology

Study of small pathogens

Mycology

Study of fungus

Parasitology

Study of parasites (bugs); examines for parasites, ova, and larvae

Serology

Evaluates the body's immune responses; examines serum

Urinalysis

Analyzing urine; examines for disorders and infections of the kidneys, UTI, etc.

Pathologist

Director of the Laboratory

MT

Medical Technologist; has a bachelor's degree and can be a lab manager

MLT

Medical laboratory technician; has an associate's or equal and can be a generalist in any department

Waived Tests

simple procedures many of which can be performed at home (home pregnancy test, for example); can be done in a POL

Moderate-Complexity Tests

Is typically done in a reference lab or hospital; requires proficiency testing in order to be able to perform

High-Complexity Tests

Is typically done in a reference lab or hospital; requires sophisticated equpiment and a high degree of interpretation to be able to perform

PPM

Provider-performed microscopy procedures; Tests classified as moderate-complexity and the office must apply for a certificate in order to be able to perform. Proficiency testing is also required

Corrective Actions

Steps taken when performing QC to ensure the reliability of the equipment being used. Steps include: repeat the control, check the expiration date of the control sample, check the expiration date of the reagents, check the machine, take machine out of commission (if other actions do not correct the issue)
