Abruption Placentae
Partial or complete premature separation of anormal inplanted placenta
Chronic Hypertension
Systolic pressure of 140 mm Hg or higher or diastolic pressure of 90mm Hg or higher that is present preconceptionally or occurs before 20 weeks of gestation
Clonus
Spasmodic alteration of muscular contraction and relaxation; counted in beats
Couvelaire Uterus
Interstitial myometrial hemorrhage after premature separation (abruption) of placenta; purple-bluish iscoloration of the uteru and boardlike rigidity of the uterus are noted
Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
Pathologic form of coagulation in which clotting factors are consumed to such an extent that generalized bleeding can occur; associated with abruptio placentae, eclampsia, intrauterine fetal demise, amniotic fluid embolism, and hemorrhage
Eclampsia
Severe complication of pregnancy of unknown cause and occuring more often in the primigravida; characterized by new onset grand mal seizures in a women with preeclampsia occuring during pregnancy or shortly after birth
Gestational Hypertension
The new onset of hypertension without proteinuria after week 20 of pregnancy
HELLP syndrome
Condition characterized by hemolysis. elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count; a complication of severe preeclampsia
Placenta Previa
Placenta that is abnormally implated in the thin, lower uterine segment and that is typed according to proximity to cervical os: total, completely occuludes os; partial, does not occlude os completely; marginal, placenta encroaches on margin of internal cervical os
Preeclampsia
Disease encountered after 20 weeks of gestation or early in the puerperium; a vasopastic disease process characterized by increasing hypertension and proteinura (0.3g protein or higher in a 24hour urine collection)
