PPE
personal protective equipment
What are standard/universal precautions taken in infection control?

A barrier is created between the health care worker and the patient's body fluids

*PPE depends on type of infectious disease

What is a negative pressure room?
a room with a ventilation system designed so that air flows from the corridors, or any adjacent area, into the negative pressure room. Also ensures that contaminated air cannot escape the room.
How are "contact" infectious diseases transmitted?
By touching area where the patient has been in contact with or touching areas of patient's body

What are 5 types of "contact" transmitted

infectious diseases?

1. ARO's (Antibiotic resistant organisms)

2. C. difficile-positive, diarrhea-positive, NYD

3. Skin/soft tissue infection or cellulitis

4. infected wounds

5. MRSA/VRE

NYD
not yet diagnosed
How are "droplet" infectious diseases transmitted?
When droplets from the infected person are propelled a short distance through the air and deposited on a susceptible host's conjuctivae, nasal mucosa, or mouth.
What are the precautions that must be taken for a contact transmitted infectious disease?

- gown needed for substantial contact with patient or environment

- gloves for all contact with patient or environment

What are the precautions that must be taken for a droplet transmitted infectious disease?

- surgical mask should be worn if within 3 feet of patient

- patient should wear a surgical mask when out of room

How are airborne infectious diseases transmitted?
by dissemination of either droplet nuclei (residue of evaporate droplets that may remain suspended in the air for long periods of time) or dust particles in the air containing the infectious agent.
What are the precautions that must be taken for an airborne infectious disease?

- private room if possible

- negative pressure room (keep doors closed)

- surgical mask

- for measles, chickenpox, and disseminated herpes zoster, non-immune personnel should not enter the room

- patient should wear surgical mask when outside of the room

What are 3 types of airborne infectious diseases?

1. Suspended pulmonary TB, diagnosed pulmoney TB

2. chickenpox

3. Widespread varicella zoster (shingles)

What is reverse isolation?
It is used when the patient is at risk of contracting an infection such as when their immune systems are compromised.
AIDS
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
ARO
antibiotic resistant organisms
MRSA
methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus
VRE
vancomycin resistant enterococcus
ESBL
extended spectrum beta lactamase
Multiple AROs
unusual combination of AROs listed above
What are the tasks to control infection that HUCs need to perform?

- give accurate information to inquiring visitors

- refer to nurse if you can't answer

- report all infectious or communicable diseases

- wear gloves when handling specimens

- practice good hand washing techniques

-know policy on disclosure of information

- do not put diagnosis of AIDS on kardex or on lab reqs

- write blood precautions on lab reqs

- practice strict confidentiality

- affix isolation stickers on all req's and all of patients kardexes
