sacking of a kansas town
drank southern pro slavery men went into kansas burning down a hotel and smashed the presses of two kansas newspapers.. the anti slavery people called on old man brown who then took half a dozen armed men and killed three different pro slavery families causing lots of fighting in kansas
growth of a railroad economy
the railroads provided a better connection for people... now farmers can produce specialized crops and cash crops.. they can get their product around faster and had cheaper transportation.. their began a high demand for grain .. so thats what the farmers started making
railroads and the prairie environment..
prairie grounds where land with just tall grass and no trees to cut down.. good for farming but couldnt cut down the grass untill john deer created the steel plow.. all the different crops that were planted and the vast amounts that were planted .. changed the prairie environment greatly
Railroads and the Urban environment
communitites soon recognized that their economic survival depended on the railroad links to the country side and urban markets.. they finally moved railroad tracks to the outside of towns instead of passing through them
Rising industrialization
industry started expanding due to the shift from water power to steam and commercial agriculture.. the factory system of organized labor and interchangable parts spread to other areas of the economy.. new technology made things easier
immigration
the population of the US grew alot.. mostly because of immigration... people were drawn to the great economy and the cheap land... they liked the idea of freedom.. irish came becasue of a huge food shortage in thier country.. the gold rush brought a lot of people like the chinese..factories relied on immigrant labor and child labor..americans blamed the immigrants for taking jobs and driving down factory wages
Southern Complaints
northern commercial farmers invested in technology.. southern commercial farmers invested in slaves...so the north was thriving economically and the south was getting mad..the south started blaming the north for using their banking skills to make the south pay to much for things like shipping on cotton...white southerners feared the immigration would shift the balance of power because the immigrants did not like the south.. the immigrants went to the north and boosted thier population
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Douglas the little giant..wanted to help economy in lands west of missouri.. and he wanted chicago to be the place of the transcontinental railroad so he had to organize territories in the rest of the louisianna purchase.. and to do this he had to gain the souths support.. so he took off this prohibition on slavery that had been on those lands for 34 years so they used popular sovereigty to determine the status of the slave...kansas and nebraska were made..
the collapse of the second american party system
the kansas nebraska act raised tensions beetween the north and the south.. these tensions put stress on political parties..jacksonian party collapsed and new parties were formed basically based on boundaries..whigs and democrats.. whigs supported catholics and immigrants.. whigs turned into the new antislavery republican party
the know nothings
party where members had to answer questions.."i know nothing".. independent party that came to power when the republicans and democrats were split..but due to inexperienced leaders and adopting a proslavery platform the party fell just as quickly as it rose..
the republicans and bleeding kansas...
race soon developed beetween northerners and southerners to settle kansas first...proslavery residents of missouri wanted kansas because it would bring slavery to the pacific if they lose they lose missouri..when the kansas elections where held missourians ran across the border and voted..where they created law that would scare away anti slavery residents.. the freestaters of kansas drafted a state constitution prohibiting slavery which caused alot of violence
the canning of charles sumner
charles sumner gave a speech that was dissing south carolina and one of its senators because he hated slavery.. the senator was brooks cousin so he beat charles sumner over the head in the senate untill charles was unconsciouns and bleeding.. southerners thought of him as a hero and gave life to the republican party
election of 1856
democrats elected buchanan..the republicans demanded kansas be let in as a free state...the republicans started dissing the south and free labor..and saying the north has oportunity and is flourishing..and stopping the expansion of slavery would perserve this opportunity and economic independence for white americans..in the end buchanan won after taking all the south and a few free strates but it was close and the union was almost controlled by and anti slavery party
dred scott decision
the owner of a slave brought him to live in a free state then brought him back to slavery.. the slave said that he should be free because he took up residency in a free state.. he lost in a vote 7 to 2 and the chief justice from the south ruled that african americans can not be or ever be citizens of the united states..they also ruled the missouri compromise unconstitutional saying it had no power to ban slavery from any territory in the US..this made popular soverighty also unconstitutional..
the Lecompton Constitution
due to free staters boycotting elections.. they made slavery legal in cansas..buchanan wanted the election to be fair but due to the boycotting he could add a slave state to the union..Douglas got angry and said the constution was fraud.. so they forced a revote and it was easily defeated..
Lincoln-Douglas debates
Lincoln started presidential debates.. he used to follow around douglas and speak after him and try to convince douglases huge crowd to vote for him.. douglas got angry and agreed to have seven debates with the republican lincoln about slavery and the north and south tension..lincoln lost the election but became noticed after tricking douglas into the freedom doctrine
the Beleagured South
northerners thought that the south wanted to extend slavery into the free states...south tried to strengthen themselves by taking expeditions in Latin America where they tried to add slave territory... the south was getting weaker and the north was getting stronger so the south was getting scared..they had to try to expand slavery to become stronger..
brown
brown brought a group of people including 5 blacks to the south to try to get slaves to fight with him.. there wasnt much slaves and they didnt fight.. brown got captured and hung but this scene grew more tension beetween the north and south
A sectional Election
Southerners wanted to attack the freeport doctrine and get a slave code to protect slavery in the territories.. but the convention took douglases platform.. lincoln won the election easily even though he had no support from the south
Secession
the south knew that with lincoln as president he would expand free states and make it so they could have a 3/4 vote abolishing slavery..so the south seceded from the union..they tried to make a compromise with an unamendable amendment gaurding slavery .. but the republicans did not want to because they would be losing something they just one
the outbrake of war
the south wanted the surrender of fort sumter.. they denied so they shot it this sort of started the war
the roots of a divided nation
the north and south had developed differently.. and the south needed slaves to keep being productive.. it became to sectional
the demands of total war
the civil war was the only total war in history.. the north had the advatage in manpower and industrial capacity..it had a bigger population it had more railroads and technology..but the south knew their land and only had to defend it not fight the north..

lincoln listened more.. knew how to talk to troops and was well liked.. davis didnt listen or have a strategy

lincoln knew he needed the loyalty of the bordering states..so he worked hard to get them
blockade and isolate
the us navy started with only 42 ships to block the confederate coastline.. the south thought that europe would come to its aid when the north blockaded its cotten exports but they didnt want to help untill they thought the south could win the war
grant in the west
grant was a cigar chompin man that took over bases and didnt retreat
