activated clotting time (activated coagulation time [ACT])
inexpensive but relatively test to evaluate the intrinsic and common pathways to coagulation.
activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT)
test used to evaluate the intrinsic and common pathways of coagulation. the test requires citrated plasma and careful adherence to collection and processing requirements
agglutination
visible or microscopic clumping to red blood cells
anisocytosis
variation of red blood cell (RBC) size that can be detected by examining a blood smear or by measuring an increase in the RBC distribution width (RDW). often increased in animals with regenerative anemia but may occur in other conditions such as iron deficiency
band neutrophil
immature neutrophil characterized by a U- or S- shaped nucleus with generally parallel sides. the number of band neutrophils increases in some animals with inflammation
basophil
type of granulocyte with a segmented nucleus and granules that stain blue to purple with Wright's stain or quick stains. marked species variation in the appearance of the granules has been noted. basophils from dogs have a few darkly purple-staining granules, basophils from cats have numerous gray to lavendar granules, and basophils from horses and cows have numerous darkly purple-staining granules
blood smears
the film of anticoagulated blood prepared on glass slides that are air dried, stained, and evaluated for cell morphology and differential leukocyte counts
coagulation cascade
term used to describe the interaction of multiple activated proenzymes (clotting factors) involved in secondary hemostasis, resulting in cross-linked fibrin stands that stabilize the primary platelet plug
