Panic of 1819 changed economics partly because the people blamed it on the gov.. they were republican so the gov got to make the ideas and policies... after the depression the people wanted the power to vote who is in office and on politics so it turned democratic.. leaders came from middle class instead of higher class like usuall.. they had to be able to talk and relate to people
Jacksons rise to power
started out as a bad republican .. no one would listen to his weird poicies... turned democrat and won the election of 1828

andrew jackson elected in 1828 marks the beginning of our current way of running politics..2 parties competing for votes...created spoiled system where gov jobs were given to supporters
jacksons political agenda in the market economy
poputlation and market economy was expanding.. 3 problems.. first demand for new lands created problems with indians...second as the economies became more specialized rival interests forced a confrontation over the tariff... third the huge economy focused attention on the banking in society

jackson owned a lot of slaves.. race became more and more singled out and layered.. indians were thought to have no way of getting better
Accommodate or Resist
southern whites wanted indians off their lands.. so they gave them the chance to become white or leave...John ross wanted them to turn white.. indians started selling their crops and owning slaves
trail of tears
jackson wanted congress to make an indian removal bill.. congress finally did..western march to get the cherokee off their own lands 15000 marched one fourth died of disease
worcestor vs georgia
said georgia had no right to extend its laws over cherokee.. jackson ignored this and went on with the removal
free blacks in the north
after indians were gone.. racial feelings towards blacks rose..even though they had a small pop at the time, the whites made policies to keep them with less opportunity than whites..segregation increased..they got the lowest paying jobs and school..
African american community..
they created schools and churches to build up for status.. asked for gradual freedom of slaves..respectfully wrote about whites that fought for freedom of slaves

blacks were portrayed as dummies if they werent slaves so stereo types were maid... and even the poorest of the whites were given a class to hate
growing crisis in south carolina
tariffs on cotton had gotten out of hand because they couldnt compete with newer cotton fields... blacks conspired to take over the city for black liberty but were stopped..
nullifiers nullified
began dividing the slave holding states to the non slave holding states.. made the tariffs in 1828 and 1832 nullified...jackson said no state had the right to seceed and lowered south carolinas taxes
National Bank and Panic of 1819
national bank was becoming to powerful over smaller banks.. they would not give loans out to smaller banks that were unreasonable without seeing gold and silver...
Bank Destroyed
Jackson didnt trust banks or paper money.. he wanted to destroy the national bank... it became a prime subject in the new election where henry clay supported it.. jackson withdrew the govs federal deposits and gave it to state banks.. eventually the banks charter expired and jackson won
Jacksons impact on Presidency...
removed indians... destroyed the national bank... veteoed bills because he didnt like them when usually presidents only veto the bill because of the grounds they are from
Van Ruins Depression
Van ruin said jackson had put to much power in the presidency and supported clays bank.. 2 months into office the economy went into a depression..
The Whigs Triumph
Whigs came after the depression and used democratic stragegies that jackson perfected to gain office
Social Bases of the two Parties..
both had the same social bases so they couldnt just go for the rich or poor votes..democrats went for farmers that werent happy with how things were going.. whigs went to urban cities were people were taking advantage of the market place..
