Who is G.B. Stoney?
Scientists found that gases confined in a glass at low pressure were able to conduct electricity when a high voltage was applied across electrodes that had been sealed into the tube. It was evident that the electrical discharge was transported by charged particle of some kind. G. B. Stoney believed the charged carriers in the gas-charged tubes were derived from the molecules of the gas and in 1874 gave the name electron to the species that carried the negative charge.
