Ischemia
Lack of oxygen to region of brain due to reduced blood flow
Necrosis
Cell death as a result of lack of oxygen/lack of blood flow to region of brain
Infarct
Area of dead cells. Tissue breaks down and is absorbed leaving a cavity.
Hematoma
A swelling or mass of blood caused by a break in a blood vessel
Hemorrhage
Actual bleeding/loss of blood from the circulatory system
Stenosis
Narrowing
lesion
An umbrella term for an abnormal change in the structure of an organ or part due to injury or disease
Atrophy
Wasting away/shrinking in size
Arteriosclerosis
Thickening, hardening and loss of elasticity of the walls of the arteries
Atherosclerosis
A type of arteriosclerosis in which there is a focal accumulation of lipids, complex carbohydrates, blood and blood products, fibrous tissue and calcium deposits along the walls of the arteries
Thrombosis
Build up of lipids and other items (see atherosclerosis) resulting in stenosis and eventually occulsion of artery
Embolus
A thrombosis that breaks away from the arterial wall and travels up the artery and lodges in a more distal artery or vessel
TIA
A temporary interruption of blood circulation to a portion of the brain. The symptoms are dependent on the area of the brain affected.
Paralysis
Loss of voluntary movement/gross limitation in movement
Paresis
Incomplete paralysis/weakness
Hemiplegia
Paralysis of one side of body
Hemiparesis
Weakness of one side of the body
Dysesthesia
Sensation as in "pins and needles"/ impairment of sensitivity to touch such that it is painful even when it should not be
Hypertension
High blood pressure which is a risk factor for stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases.
Aneurysm
Localized, balloon like dilation of a blood vessel caused by a weakened arterial wall or congenital defect.
Anoxia
Oxygen deficiency in brain tissue.
Arteriovenous Malformation (AV malformation)
Congenital condition in which arteries and veins are tangled and twisted together in a localized area.
Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA)
Sudden onset of focal (not gradual) neurological deficits as a result of ischemia or hemorrhage.
Aphasia
A language impairment resulting from a stroke. It affects all modalities of language including speaking, listening, reading and writing although not necessarily to the same degree. It may be accompanied by impairments in cognition and memory.
Stroke/Brain attack
Suddenly emerging neurological deficits caused by vascular circulation impairments (e.g. embolism, thrombosis, or hemorrhage)
