Cephalosporins are beta-lactam antibiotics, similiar to penicillins that destroy bacterial cell walls, causing destruction of micro-organisms - cephalosporins are bactericidal medications with a high therapeutic index

Urinary tract infections, postoperative infections, pelvic infections and meningitis

What are some possible adverse reactions for cephalosporins?

-Anaphylaxis
-Possible cross sensitivity to peniciilin -Bleeding tendencies with use of cefotetan -Pain with IM injection |

What are some nursing considerations for patients on cephalosporins?

-Instruct clients to complete the prescribed course of therapy, even though symptoms may resolve before the full course of antimicrobial treatment is completed
-Advise clients to take oral cephalosporins with food -Clients should store cephalosporins in the refrigerator (for oral) |
