Sedative-hypnotics

treatment of sleep disorders

Sedative-hypnotics (Non-Benzodiazepines)

Short term use for insomnia

Sedative-hypnotics (Benzodiaepines)

Used to induce sleep but also treat panic and anxiety

Anticonvulsants

stabilize nerve cell membrane and suppress abnormal electric impulses in the cerebral cortex. Prevents seizures

Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and neuromuscular disorders drugs

reduces the symptoms or replaces the dopamine deficit, elevates or prevents the destruction of acetylcholine concentration and relieves muscle spasms

broad spectrum penicillian

used to treat both gram positive and gram negative bacteria.

Penicillinase-resistant penicillin

used to treat penicillinase-producing S. aureus

(not effective against gram negative bacteria)

Cephalosporins (third generation)

antibiotics that are bactericidal with actions similar to penicillins. This generation is resistant to beta-lactamases and act primarily against gram negative organisms

Macrolides

used to treat mild to moderate infections of resp. tract, sinuses, GI tract, skin, and STDs(chlamydia). ALSO pneumococci)

tetracyclines

bacteriostatic( inhibits the growth OR mulitplication of bacteria) effects and may be bacteriocidal against certain organisms and helps treat stomach ulcers & acne(topical)

(can interact with milk)

Aminoglycosides

Bactericidal (inhibits protein synthesis by binding directly to the 30S ribosomal subunit. effective against gram-negative bacilli, some aerobic gram-positive bacteria mycobacteria, and some protozoa. FOR SERIOUS INFECTIONS primarily administered parentally.

Sulfonamides

Bacteriostatic (inhibits bacterial synthesis of folic acid without affecting normal cells. Used to treat ACUTE UTIs

(NOT EFFECTIVE AGAINST VIRUSES AND FUNGI)

Antitubercular

used to treat TB

Antifungal

used to treat fungal infections

Antiviral

used to prevent or delay the spread of a viral infection.

Antimalarial

used to treat malaria caused by the protozoan parasites plasmodium spp. carried by infected Anopheles mosquitoes.

Urinary anti-infective

reduces bacterial growth to treat acute and chronic UTIs. (targets E. coli.)

ART: Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors

For the management of patients with HIV infection and prevention of maternal-fetal HIV transmission

ART: Protease inhibitor

drugs that act against he HIV enzyme protease, preventing it from dividing and fully maturing

Antiinflammatory: First generation NSAIDs

Salicylates

most commonly used to control pain, reduce fever and inflammation.

NSAID: COX-2 inhibitors

(2nd generation)

inhibits prostaglandin synthesis and inflammatory response. Protection of the stomach lining is decreased and also clotting time is decreased with this medication class.

immunomodulator: Tumor necrosis factor blocker

used to treat moderate to severe RA by disrupting the inflammatory process and delaying disease progression.

Antigout: uric acid biosynthesis inhibitor

lowers serum uric acid levels preventing the precipitation a gout arthritis attack. (attacks joints, tendons and other tissues. Also good for patients with gout AND renal impairments

NONopioid Analgesic (OTC)

inhibits prostaglandin synthesis to decrease pain and inhibits hypothalamic heat-regulator center to reduce fever.

(also commonly used to treat fever and flu-like symtoms in children)

(effective pain reliever for some types of athritis)

Opioids (Rx needed)

Act on the opiate receptors in the CNS system to reduce pain or severe pain.

Opioid agonist-antagonist

given to relieve pain while reducing toxic effects and dependency.

(Pt with a history of opioid abuse should NOT be recieve this med. because withdrawal symptoms may occur)

Antidepressant :SSRI's

used to treat major depression by blocking nerve fibers increasing serotonin in nerve cells. Treats bulimia, OCD, panic disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder
