what are autotrophs?
An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
what is ATP synthase complex?
huge molecular complex embedded in the inner membrane of mitochondria
what is a chemical energy?
is the potential of a chemical substance to undergo a transformation through a chemical reaction or, to transform other chemical substances
what are examples of Chemical energy?
batteries and cells
what are homeotherms?
An organism that maintains its body temperature at a constant level, usually above that of the environment, by its metabolic activity
what are poikilotherms?
An organism that cannot regulate its body temperature except by behavioral means.
what are heterotherms?
is a physiological term for animals that exhibit characteristics of both poikilothermy and homeothermy
what is ATP?
considered by biologists to be the energy currency of life. It is the high-energy molecule that stores the energy we need to do just about everything we do.
what is adenosine diphosphate?
is an organic molecule involved in the central part of the metabolism of the cell that generates energy.
what is phosphorylation?
is the addition of a phosphate (PO4) group to a protein or other organic molecule.
what is the mitochondrion?
An organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur
what are the three stages of cellular resperation?
Glycolysis: the cytoplasm
2) Krebs Cycle/The Citric Acid Cycle: mitochondria
3) Electron Transport Chain: the mitochondria (specifically, the inner mitochondrial membrane)
what is the inner membrane?
the membrane which separates the chloroplast stroma from the intermembrane space
what is the inter membrane space?
The intermembrane space (IMS) is the region between the inner membrane and the outer membrane of a mitochondrion or a chloroplast
what is the matrix?
The matrix of a mitochondrion is the mitochondrion internal spaces enclosed by the inner membrane
what is the cristae?
are the internal compartments formed by the inner membrane of a mitochondrion.
what is cellular respiration?
Cellular Respiration is the process by which cells obtain energy from glucose
what are enzymes?
A substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction
what are substrates?
basically things that enzymes act upon
what are products?
A substance produced during a natural, chemical, or manufacturing process: "waste products".
what is the function of ATP synthase complex?
Its function is to convert the energy of protons (H+) moving down their concentration gradient into the synthesis of ATP.
