12 Cards in this Set

  • 3rd side (hint)

Nucleus

Largest organelle that contains DNA.

Controls all cell activity, regulates transcription of genes, involved in directing protein synthesis

Nucleolus

Formation of ribosomes

What is the function?

Mitochondria

Site of aerobic respiration, making ATP molecules that provide energy for the cell

Chloroplasts

Contains the pigment chlorophyll. Site of protein synthesis, usually in the cells of the leave of a plant

Vacuole/vesicles

Has multiple different functions depending on the cell type:

•storage of food and nutrients

•support in plant cells

•transport and export of substances in and out of the cell by endocytosis and exocytosis

Golgi Body

A stack of flattened membrane-bound sacks that are not linked to each other.

The function involves processing and packaging molecules into vesicles for movement out of the cell by exocytosis

Rough ER

Ribosomes attaches to the surface. Function is involved in Intra-cellular transport. Site of protein synthesis by ribosomes

Smooth ER

No ribosomes. Synthesis of lipids and cholesterol. Breaks down toxins

Ribosomes

Made up of proteins and rRNA. Function is to build proteins- site of translation

Lysosome

Breakdown inside cells of non-functional organelles, other cell debris and material taken into the cell by endocytosis e.g. by white blood cells- they are able to break down materials

Cytoskeleton

Internal framework inside a cell. Function is to support and move organelles inside the cell, assemble the spindle prior to mitotic ivision and in animals cells help maintain shape.

Centriole

Involved in cell division and formation of cilia and flagella
