DNA

The molecule that carries the instructions for a cell to live.

Chromosome

A piece of DNA

The Cell Cycle

The time in the life of a cell from when it is created to when it finishes dividing.

Interphase

The first part of the Cell Cycle where the cell grows, does its job, and makes a copy of its DNA.

Mitosis

The middle four steps of the Cell Cycle where an exact copy of the nucleus is made.

Prophase

The first step in Mitosis where the cell prepares for making a new nucleus.

Metaphase

The second step in Mitosis where the chromosomes (pairs of DNA strands that look like X’s) meet in the middle of the cytoplasm.

Anaphase

The third step in Mitosis where the chromosome pairs are pulled apart to opposite ends of the cell.

Telophase

The fourth and last step in Mitosis where new nuclear membranes form around the two groups of chromosomes.

Cytokinesis

The final step in the Cell Cycle where the cytoplasm pinches in to form two new cells.

Cell Plate

The partition that is formed between plant cells after Telophase to divide the two new cells.
