keratinocytes
most numerous (90% of epidermal cells), produce keratin, are mitotic in the basale, and are reduced to dead scales in the corneum. millions of these dead cells rub off each day and we have a totally new epidermis every 35 to 40 days.
melanocytes
produce pigment melanin and are found in stratum basale and stratum spinosum.
langerhans
cells which arise from bone marrow and migrate to epidermis. they function as macrophages.
merkle cells
