What are the three parts of the cell theory?

1. Every living thing is made of one or more cells.


2. Cells are the basic units of structure that carry out the functions needed to support life.


3. Cells come only from other living cells (preexisting cells).


What did Hooke do?

Hooke gave the cell its name while looking at cork. (Cork comes from bark of cork tree.)

What did Leeuwenhoek do?

Leeuwenhoek was one of the first people to describe living cells. He studied pond water under a microscope.


What did Schwann do?

Schwann was the first to conclude that all animals are made of cells.


What did Schleiden do?

Schleiden concluded that all plants are made of cells.

What did Virchow do?

Virchow determined that all cells must come from preexisting cells.
