Nucleus
Large round structure located inside the cytoplasm of the cell, specialized for information storage, controls cell activities, surrounded by nuclear membrane, contains other organelles (chromosomes and nucleoli). Nucleolus is located in the nucleus; its involved in the production of ribosomes.
Mitochondira
Involved in cellular respiration, oten called the “powerhouse” of the cell, contain materials necessary for the respiratory reactions, release energy for life activities.
Endoplasmic reticulum
Transports materials throughout the cell by a system of channels or canals. Chemical reactions take place on the surface, which can be rough or smooth. The rough surface is due to the presence f ribosomes that make cell proteins.
Ribosomes
Synthesize (make) proteins from amino acids. May be attached to the endoplasmic reticulum or free in the cytoplasm.
Chromosomes
Long threadlike structures located in the nucleus of the cell. Contain hereditary information organized as genes – the hereditary units made up of DNA that control cell activities and may be passed on to the next generation.
Vacuoles
Sac-like structures in the cytoplasm used by the cell to store various materials including water, wastes, and food.
Golgi Complex
A stack of membrane-bounded channels and vacuoles. They synthesize, package, and secrete cell products.
Lysosomes
Membrane-bounded sacs, contain digestive enzymes, are involved in food digestion in one- celled animals and destroy damaged or old cell parts or cells in multicelluar animals.
Centrioles
Found mainly in animal cells, look like cylinders, located in pairs near the nucleus, involved in cell division.
Chloroplasts
Chlorophyll containing structures found in cells of green plants and some algae. Site of photosynthesis.
Cell Wall
Found in plant cells only, it is rigid, strong and stiff. Its function is to protect.
Cell Membrane
Found in both plant and animal, it is selectively permeable. It controls movement of materials in/out of cell, it also maintains homeostasis.
