Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm

Location; Between the nucleus and the cell membrane.

What is it made of; Water, gas, and waste.

Description; Thick substance.

Function; Flows within cell. "holds" organelles.

Endoplasmic Reticulum Smooth

Endoplasmic Reticulum Smooth

Location; Found through out the cell but the density is higher near the nucleus and the Golgi apparatus.

What is is made of; Ribosomes

Description; Looks like a system of canals. Double membrane that lies parallel to one another

Function; Provides a surface for the ribosomes to attach to. Has a system of canals, for material to pass through the cytoplasm.

Endoplasmic Reticulum Rough

Endoplasmic Reticulum Rough

Location; Found through out the cell but the density is higher near the nucleus and the Golgi apparatus.

What is it made of; Ribosomes.

Description; System of canals.

Function; Responsible for the assembly of many proteins.

Ribosomes

Ribosomes

Location; Attached to the endoplasmic reticulum.

What is it made of; Contains large amounts of R.N.A (ribonucleic acid)

Description; Granular in appearance.

Function; Contain enzymes that control protein synthesis.

Mitochondria

Mitochondria

Location; Mitochondria is located in the cytoplasm in the animal cell.

What is it made of; 2 membranes- each layer contains protein and fat.

Description; Rod shape.

Function; Releases this energy that supports all cell activities. Helps control amount of water in cytoplasm. Involved in the break down of sugars, fatty acids, and amino acids.

Lysosome

Lysosome

Location; Located in the cytoplasm.

What is it made of; Enzymes.

Description; Simple, single membrane. "suicide sac" -- "stomach of the cell" .

Function; Contains enzymes that cause the digestion(breaking down) of proteins. When a cell takes in a large molecule the lysosome breaks it up. Enzymes are very concentrated- if ruptured the enzymes would destroy the cell.

Golgi apparatus

Golgi apparatus

Location; Located close to the endoplasmic reticulum.

What is it made of; Cells with clearly defined nuclei that is made up of a series of flattened, stacked pouches called cisternae.

Description; Looks like a stack of flattened sacs. Separated by membranes.

Function; Receives molecules of protein from endoplasmic reticulum. Acts as a protein packaging factory. It wraps up a large number of protein molecules into a single bundle, this bundle goes to the cell membrane to be exported. This is how hormones, enzymes, and other types of protein are secreted.

Vacuole

Vacuole

Location; It is located In the cytoplasm.

What is it made of; It may contain food or waste. Fluids-- mainly water.

Description; Filled with fluids. Very large in plants.

Function; The vacuolar membrane controls movement of molecules from vacuole and into cell.

Chloroplast

Chloroplast

Location; Located in the cytoplasm of a plant.

What is it made of; It is made of chlorophyll

Description; Green pigment, looks like a stack of pancakes.

Function; Photosynthesis occurs and converts the suns energy into carbohydrates.

Cell Wall

Cell Wall

Location; The outer most layer of the cell.

What is it made of; It is made of cellulose and protein.

Description; Middle lamella-- jelly like. Non-living.

Function; It protects and supports.

Nucleus

Nucleus

Location; Center of cell

What is it made of; DNA & RNA

Description; Round, 2 layers

Function; Control center for all cell activities

Nuclear Membrane

Nuclear Membrane

Location; The outer most layer of the nucleus

What is it made of; Has and an underlying meshwork of filaments called the nuclear lamina. The lamina is made of proteins called lamins

Description; Thin double membrane

Function; Allows certain substances to pass from the nucleus to the cytoplasm

Nucleoplasm

Nucleoplasm

Location; Between the nucleolus and the nuclear membrane

What is it made of; It is rich in protein

Description; Thick fluid substance

Function; Hold the nucleus in place

Nucleolus

Nucleolus

Location; Center of the cell

What is it made of;

Description; Round

Function; Produces ribosomes. Takes part in protein synthesis

Chromosome

Chromosome

Location; In the nucleus of the cell

What is it made of; Made of genes(DNA & protein). DNA= deoxyribonucleic acid

Description; Granular material

Function; Controls the activities of the cell, info on heredity, structure, and function. During reproduction chromatin shortens, and thickens into rods called chromosomes.

Cell Membrane

Cell Membrane

Location; The outer layer of a cell

What is it made of; Protein and lipids

Description; Not solid, pores, and selectively permeable membrane

Function; Pores allow certain substances into and/or out of the cell.
