What is a somatic cell

Any cell of a living organism other than the reproductive cells

How many pairs of chromosomes do somatic cells contain?

23 pairs - called homologous chromosomes

How many sets of chromosomes do somatic cells contain?

2 sets - called diploid cells

What is mitosis?

The process in which single cells divide into two identical cells

What happens during interphase?

Duplication of DNA and centrosomes

What happens during prophase?

Chromosomes condense and mitotic spindle forms

What happens during prometaphase?

Nuclear envelope fragments

Micro tubules attach to kinetichores

What happens during metaphase? (Meet in the middle)

They all line up along the metaphase plate

What happens during anaphase?

Chromatids separate

What is telophase?

Split apart completely after cleavage furrow

How does motosis happen?

INTERPHASE- Chromatids duplicate

DNA replicates

PROPHASE- chromatin condenses and coils.

'Protein ropes' (micro tubules) are left behind as the chromatids head to opposite ends of the cell.

METAPHASE- (longest phase) chromosomes attach to micro tubules at centromere.

ANAPHASE- (away) chromosomes are split and dragged toward either end of cell.

TELOPHASE- cell is restructured. Cleavage furrow cytokinesis creates two new cells.

DAUGHTER CELLS CREATED half from mum half from dad

What is meiosis?

Cell division that produces reproductive cells.

Reduction division.

23 cells in each sperm and egg.
