Pump brake pedal 3 times. Then apply firm pressure to the pedal and hold forn5 seconds. The pedal should not move. If it does there may be a leak.

Why put the starter switch key in uour pocket during the pre trip inspection?

Because in step 3 you have to start the engine and inspect the cab to listen for unusual noises.
