Sinking of the Maine
The U.S. battleship Maine was blown up in Cuba's Havana harbor on Feb. 15, 1898. Newspapers blamed the explosion on Spanish sabotage, leading to the declaration of war (sending the Maine to Havana is an example of Gunboat Diplomacy <intimidation>)
Yellow Journalism
In the 1890's several newspapers deliberately sensationalized news from Cuba with stories of atrocities to sell more newspapers
de Lome letter
Feb. 1898 Hearst published in the Journal (newspaper) a letter leaked by the Cuban rebels the McKinley was called a weak and stupid politician by Enrique Dupuy de Lome (Spanish Ambassador to Washington D.C.)
