Hesterno, Licini, die otiosi

Yesterday, Lincinius a day of leisure

multum lusimus in meis tabellis

we played many [things] in my little books

ut convenerat esse delicatos.

as it had been agreed to be witty [or "that they were witty]

scribens versiculos uterque nostrum

each of us writing little verses

lubebat numero modo hoc modo illoc

[and each] was playing now with this metre, now with that

reddens mutua per iocum atque vinum.

returning mutual [verses] through humour and wine

atque illinc abii tuo lepore incensus, Licini, facetiisque

and I went away from that place having been set aflame by your charm, Licinius, and your wits

ut nec me miserum cibus iuvaret

so that food was not benefitting/nourishing miserable me,

nec sommnus tegeret quiete ocellos,

nor was sleep covering my little eyes with quite

sed toto indomitus furore

but wild in my madness, across my whole bed

versarer cupiens videre lucem,

I was being tossed, wanting to see the daylight

ut tecum loquerer simulque ut essem.

so that I could speak with you and be [with you] at the same time.

at defessa labore membra postquam

But after my limbs, tried from exertion,

semimortua lectulo iacebat,

were lying, half dead, on the bed

hoc, iucunde, tibi poema feci,

I created this poem for you, delightful one [i.e. friend]

ex quo perspiceres meum dolorem

From which you may understand my anguish.

nunc audax cave sis, precesque nostras, oramus, cave despuas, ocelle,

Now, beware [lest] you may be bold/daring prayers, my little eye [i.e. apple of my eye]

ne poenas Nemesis reposcat a te.

lest Nemesis demand punishments/penalties from you

est vehemens dea: laedere hanc caveto

She is a powerful goddess: beware [not] to offend her.
