Cattle auction

Carrie and Nick both stood in the line of waiting children. They waited patiently, and hoped someone will pick them. Nick was sick and looked unwell, which is why Carrie told him to smile and look nice, because no one would want to take in a sick kid. Time passed by and all the unwanted children were left. Miss Evan was asked if she could take in two children, she said she is only able to take two girls not a boy and a girl. Miss Evans told them they only have one room available. Carrie told her that Nick slept with her, so it wouldn't be a problem. Miss Evan finally gave in and said she was willing to take a chance.

Contrast

Mr. Evans

- strict rules (p 24)

-intense between Mr. Evans and Nick, because on page 30 Nick stole biscuits from Mr. Evans shop, and Mr. Evans threatened to hit him.

- Mr. Evans was mean and bullied Auntie Lou, I think this because on page 32 he blamed Auntie Lou for him slipping on the mat, which wasn't her fault.

- The children hated staying there, but didn't want to leave because they are used to it now which is said on page 33.

Comparison

Mr. Evans and Hepzibah

- On page 36 Auntie Lou assured Nick and Carrie's mother that she will try to do her best to take care of the children, and on page 54 Hepzibah comforted Nick after she had told the legend about the skull, from reading this i know that both Auntie lou and Hepzibah were really nice to the children.

- Both Auntie Lou and hepzibah believed in legends. I know this because in the beginning of ch.4 Auntie Lou was telling the children that people say not to go to the druids bottom after dark, and on page 53 Hepzibah was telling the children about the legend of the screaming skull.

- Have four members staying at there house

-both have children staying at there home

Contrast

Hepzibah

-warm,safe, lighted place as stated in the beginning of chapter 5

-cozy

-comfortable

-loving family, and welcoming family, because they didn't kick Albert after he got Pnemonia which is written in the novel in the beginning od ch.5

- Have a library in the basement, which is stated in the beginning of ch.5

How does Miss Evans react to Mr. Evans? Why did she think of him more as a father than a brother?

Miss Evans is scared of Mr. Evans. I know this because on page 29 Auntie Lou tells us about how Mr.E would discipline her by making her sit on the fire place mantle. This is why as an adult she is timid around him.

Although Nick seems childish in some ways, he understands grown-ups quite well. How can you tell this from the way he reacts to Er. Evans threat?

I think Nick understands grown ups well because when Mr. Evans threatens to beat him up, which was written on page 31, instead of crying or being scared he told Mr.Evans that he will tell his teacher that he hit him. This shows that Nick knows that grown ups don't mind being nasty but they hate it when other grownups know they have been nasty.

Mr. Evans makes out that he is very religious but he can be very unkind, nasty and deceitful at sometimes give examples of this.

On page 32 Nick told Carrie how Mr. Evans blamed Auntie Lou for slipping on the mat, He said that she had polished underneath it, but she hadn't This incident provides proof that Mr. Evans doesn't care about how others feel, and takes he takes his anger out on them.

Where were the children's mother and father?

On page 34 it states that Carrie's father was on convy duty in the North Sea, and her mother had gone to live in Gloscow so she could see him when he came into port. Her mother also drove an abulance.

There mother visited one day how did it go?

It is obvious that the visit was fake. No one was being true to their feelings. For instance on page 35 in the Novel Mr. Evans was being awfully nice to the children, he closed the shop a half hour early, and gave the kids meat, which they rarely had. Everyone acted as if everything was okay to assure Nick and Carrie's mother.

Why does Nick exaggerate his thankfulness to Auntie Lou and only politely thank Mr. Evans

Nick exaggerated his thankfulness to Auntie Lou and only politely to Mr. Evans, because he disliked Mr.Evans. Based on what I read in the beginning of ch.4 Nick thinks Mr. Evans knew he wanted a knife. Nick told Carrie how he had been looking at the knife in Mr. Evans shop for a long time, and he even saw Mr. Evans look at him, while he was looking at the knife.

How come Mr. Evans doesn't give Nick a knife?

According to the text in the beginning of chapter 4 Mr. Evans didn't give Nick a knife knowing that he wanted one because he believed that it was bad when people got what they wanted, He always said "want must be your master."

Describe Mr. Evans relationship with his sister Dilys.

Based on what I read on page 40, Mr Evans thought his sister made her bed and turned her back with her own people. Mr. Evans disliked how his sister got married right after their father's death. Dancing on our father's grave is what Mr. Evans called it.

What does accepting a goose from his estranged sister says about Mr. Evans

On page 40 it states Mr. Evans holds a grudge against his sister because he believes she turned her back on her family by getting married right after their father's death, but he is alright with accepting goose from her sister. This tells us that Mr. Evans is greedy and selfish.

Why are the children afraid to go to Hepzibah's

The children were afraid to go to Hepzibah's house, because on page 41 in the novel Auntie Lou had told them that the Druids bottom was a queer place, and filled with the old religion. She had said people still say that it's not a place to go after dark

What do you suppose Nick and Carrie run away from?

I think the sound that Nick and Carrie are running away from at the end of Ch.4 is chicken, because the creature made the sound gobble gobble.

Before we met him Aunty Lou gives us clues as to what he is like. Describe the picture she creates

On page 23-24 Aunty Lou gives Nick and rules about living the house, and Mr. Evans expectations. She gives the numerous amounts of things that that Mr. Evans excepts. This tells us Mr. Evans is very strict. Aunty Lou also states that Mr. Evans is a dignified man.

Description of Hepzibah

CHILDREN RESPONE TO MR JOHNNY

Why does the first line of CH.5 sound so familiar.

The first line of Chapter 5, a warm, safe, lighted place, sounds familiar, because the last line of ch.4 was they fell through it to light, warmth, and safety. The author uses basically the same wording. The author does this to enforce the importance of Hepzibah's kitchen as a place where the children feel most comforteable and comforted.

Why might the first sentence of ch.5 be considered an unsatisfactory sentence?

It might be considered an unsatisfactory sentence because it has no verbes or a predicates.

There are four comparisons which are used to show how comforting Hepzibah's kitchen is. What are they? Which one is your favourite?

- loving arms when you were lonely

-safety wen you were scared, this one is my favourite because this sentence shows exactly how they were feeling at that moment

2 adjectives to describe Hepzibah's kitchen, which details prove you correct.

Welcoming and cozy, I think these adjectives describe Hepzibah's kitchen perfectly, because on page 46 the author had written coming into the kitchen was like loving arms when you were lonely, which tells us that it was welcoming. The author also states that coming into the kitchen was like coming home in a bitter cold day like coming home to a bright leaping fir which tells us that it was cozy.
