Why do we need a circulatory system?
We need more advanced ways of distributing nutrients and removing wastes.
What are cells bathed by?
Interstitial fluid
What are the 3 main fluid centers found in the body?
Plasma, intercellular compartment, and intstertial fluid
What does blood exchange substances with directly?
Tissue fluid, not with cells
What is the actual purpose of circulation?
To service the cells
What function does blood serve and what would make it incapable of serving this function?
Blood removes waste products from tissue fluid and it brings tissue fluid the O2 and nutrients cells need to continue their existence. It would not be able to do this if it didn't become refreshed in the lungs, at the intestines, and at the kidneys.
Where does blood become refreshed?
lungs, intestines, and at the kidneys
What are 4 main functions of the circulatory system?
generate blood pressure
transport the blood
get blood to capillaries where exchange takes place
regulate blood flow according to the needs of the body
How does the lympatic system assist the cardiovascular system?
vessels collect excess tissue fluid and return it to the cardiovascular system.
Where does excess interstitial fluid go?
to lymphatic vessels
What collects in the tissues when exchanges occur in the tissues between blood and tissue fluid? And where does this substance go?
Water, goes into lymphatic vessels
Where does all lymphatic drainage go?
L/R subclavians
What is fluid called as sooon as it enters lymphatic vessels?
lymph
Why do shoes that are loose in the morning feel so tight in the evening?
Gravity increases the pressure inside capillaries. Tissue fluid leaks into tissue spaces--and your shoes get too snug.
