The cardiovascular system consist of
the heart
arteries & arterioles
veins * venules
capillaries
see how it works:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/heart/heartmap.html
functional cardiovascular system is vital for
supplying oxygen and nutrients to tissues and removing waste from them
What covers the heart
pericardium
What are the two layers of the Pericardium
Fibrous pericardium- is the outer layer, made of tough connective tissue and anchors the heart to the sternum, vertebra, and the diaphragm
endocardium -is the inner layer that surrounds the heart. Made of viceral pericardium( at the base of the heart, the visceral pericardium folds back to become the parietal pericardium that lines the fibrous pericardium
What is serous fluid
between the parietal and visceral pericardia is a potential space called the pericardial cavity where the serous fluid exists to prevent friction between the heart layers
WALL OF THE HEART

what is the outer layer
The outer most layer is the epicardium; made of a connective tissue and epithelium, and houses blood and lymph capillaries along with coronary arteries. It is the same as the visceral pericardium
WALL OF THE HEART

what is the middle layer
middle layer called the myocardium consists of cardiac muscle and is the thickest layer of the heart wall
WALL OF THE HEART

what is the inner layer
inner is the endocardium is smooth muscle and is made up of connective tissue and epithelium, and is continuous with the endothelium of the major vessels joining the heart
What are the chambers of the heart?
two atrium and two ventricles
What do the artrium do
Atria receive blood returning to the heart and have thin walls and ear-like auricles projecting from their exterior
What do the ventricles do
thick-muscled ventricles pump blood to the body
