When you place an animal in right lateral recumbancy, which lung will be visible in the x-ray?
The left lung because the right lung will collapse.

What happens to the trachea when the heart is enlarged?
It becomes parallel to the spine.
Do you aim for an inspiratory or an expiratory x-ray?
Inspiratory
If the animal is positioned on its back, is this a VD or a DV view?
VD
If you want to look at the heart, would you take a DV or a VD view?
DV
Why is it difficult to assess cardiac size in an x-ray from a dog?
In dogs, there are marked differences in size based on breed and age.

Puppies, brachycephalics, and fat dogs tend to have relatively large and rounded cardiac silhouettes.
How might the heart look different between and inspiratory and an expiratory film?
On an expiratory film, the heart may appear to be large and the lungs too opaque.
What might an abnormally shaped heart indicate?
An enlarged chamber or vessel
What does a 1 O'clock bulge indicate?
Aortic stenosis
What does a 2 O'clock bulge indicate?
Pulmonic stenosis
What does a 3 O'clock bulge indicate?
enlarged left atrium
What condition causes 1, 2, and 3 O'clock bulges (the three knuckles)?
PDA
If measurement of the heart size is not a good indicator of heart failure, what is the purpose of doing a chest x-ray?
To look for other signs of heart failure such as

Pulmonary oedema for LHF

CVC/Hepatic venous congestion, hepatomegally, peritoneal or pleural effusion for RHF
In dogs, where would you most likely see pulmonary oedema? Is this also true for cats?
Caudal lung lobes, however in severe cases it may spread throughout.

In cats, the location of pulmonary oedema is less predictable.
