Likely to be a bacterial conjunctivitis that has occurred secondary to a foreign body.




The foreign body has allowed normal commensals of the eye to become pathogenic.




Remove FB, flush it out.




Place dog on Fusidic acid twice daily as likely gram +.




Chloramphenicol is also a good choice with a broader spectrum of action.

A concerned puppy breeder has come into your practice with a 3 week old puppy with swollen eyelids that haven't opened. This is concerning the owner as they realise they should be opened by now. Likely diagnosis and treatment options?

Puppies eyes should be open by 10-14 days.




Swollen eyelids, with crusting and mucopurelent discharge escaping suggests opthalmia neonatrum.




Open eyelids gently with blunt scissors along fusion line.




Irrigate the ocular surface with sterile saline. Treat infection with a broad spectrum topical AB and a lubricant.

Suspect follicular conjunvitis which is hypertrophy of the lymphoid glands due to chronic antigenic stimulation. Why do I say this? The dogs less than 18 months and also you can see the little nodules.




Treat with topical steroids and saline irrigation.


If unresponsive debride the excess follicles under topical anaesthetic by using dry gauze placed over cotton bud.
