System Unit
Is a case that contains electronic components of the computers used too procces data.
Motherboard
Is sometimes called a system board, is the main circuit board of the system unit.
chip
is a small piece of semi conducting material, usually silicon, on witch integrated circuits are etched.
CPU
central processing unit, interupts and carries out the basic instructions that operate a computer.
Multi-core Processor
is a chip with two or more seperate processor cores.
Control unit
Is the computer of the processor that directs and coordinates most of the operations in the computer
ALU
Arthemtic logic unit, another component of the processor, performs arethmetic, comparison, and other operations.
System Clock
A clock built into the computer.
Clock speed
I measured by the number of ticks per second.
Binary system
A number system that has just two unique digits 0 and 1 called bits.
bit
Is the smallest unit of data the computer can process.
byte
Provides enough different combinations of 0's and 1's to represent 256 individual characters.
memory
Consists of electronic computer that stores instructions waiting to be executed by the processor.
volatile memory
Memory that loses its content.
nonvolatile memory
Does not lose its contents when power is removed.
RAM memory
Computer memory.
ROM memory
Read-only memory.
Memory module
Is a type of nonvolatile memory that can be erased.
memory slot
Hold memory modules.
Cache
Memory cache holds memory.
L1 Cache
Is built directly into the processor.
L2 Cache
Is slightly slower then L1
ROM
Read-only memory.
Flash Memory
Is a type of novelette memory that can be erased electronically.
CMOS
Provides high speed and consumes little power.
Access Time
Is the amount of time it takes the processor to read data.
nanosecond
Is one billionth of a second.
Expansion slot
Is a socket on the motherboard that can hold an adaptor card.
adapter card
sometimes called an expansion card is a circuit board that enhances functions of a computer.
flash memory
the memory that has flash
peripheral
is a device that connects to the system unit and is controlled by the processor.
video card
also called a graphics card converts computer output into a video signal.
sound card
enhances the sound output.
hub
a controlling unit for the computer.
graphics card
converts computer output into a video signal.
memory card
is a removable flash memory device, usually no bigger that 1.5in in height
port
is the point at which a person attaches to or communicates with a system unit.
USB port
Short for universal serial bus port it can connect multiple types of devices.
Fire Wire Port
is similar to a USB port in that it can connect multiple types of devices.
SCSI port
allows you to attach peripherals such as a disk drive and printers.
port replicator
is an external device that provides connections or peripherals through ports.
docking station
which is an external device that attaches to a mobile computer.
bus
Allows the various devices both inside and attached to the system unit.
system bus
The bus thats for the system.
front side bus
The bus that is in the front.
backside bus
The bus that is in the back.
expansion bus
Allows the processor to communicate with peripherals.
bay
is an opening inside the system unit in which you can install additional equipment.
drive bay
Is a rectangular opening that typically holds disk drives.
power supply
Is the components of the system unit that converts the wall outlet AC power.
