What does the Empirical Formula show? (1)
Gives the smallest whole number ratio of atoms in a compound
How do you work out the Empirical Formula of a compound? (5)
- List all the elements in the compound
- Underneath them, write their experimental masses - Divide each mass by the relative atomic mass for that particular element - Turn the numbers you get into a simple ration by dividing the numbers by the smallest of the numbers before - Then put them into a ratio |
What is the equation to work out percentage composition by mass of compounds? (1)
Percentage composition by mass = relative atomic mass x no. of atoms / RFM of whole compound x 100
