What is covalent bonding?
Where atoms share electrons
What is the world's hydrosphere?
All the water in the oceans, seas, lakes rivers etc.
What is the lithosphere?
The outer layer of the Earth, the crust and the top of the mantle
What is the biosphere?
Anything alive or that comes from living things
What does electrolysis mean?
Splitting up with electricity
Why are most molecular substances gases?
They have weak forces between molecules and so have low melting and boiling points.
Why don't molecular compounds conduct electricity?
Molecular compounds don't contain charges.
Why can solid ionic compounds conduct when dissolved in water but not when solid?
To conduct electricity the charges need to be able to move. This can happen when dissolved but not when solid.
What type of structure does silicon dioxide have?
Giant covalent
What is an ore?
A rock that contains metal.
How much copper can be extracted from 800g of copper oxide (CuO)?
639g
Name a metal that can be extracted using carbon?
Zinc, iron, tin or copper
Why can't some metal oxides be reduced using carbon?
They are more reactive than carbon
During electrolysis where will metal form?
At the cathode (negative electrode)
What does reducing mean?
Gaining electrons or losing oxygen
What does oxidising mean?
Losing electrons or gainin oxygen
Why do metals conduct electricity?
They have a sea of electrons that can move.
