What are the four main things in blood?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma
What do red blood cells do?
Carry oxygen from the lungs to all the cells in the body
In what ways are red blood cells specialised?
Concave shape; large surface area for absorbing oxygen and helps them to pass smoothly through capillaries
No nucleus; more room for haemoglobin
Packed with haemoglobin
What happens to haemoglobin in the lungs?
Haemoglobin combines with oxygen to become oxyhaemoglobin. In body tissues the reverse happens and oxyhaemoglobin splits up into haemoglobin and oxygen to release oxygen to the cells
What three things do white blood cells do?
Change shape to engulf microorganisms
Produce antibodies to fight microorganisms
Produce antitoxins to neutralise toxins produced by microorganisms
Do white blood cells have a nucleus?
Yes
What are platelets?
Small fragments of cells with no nucleus
What do platelets do?
They help the blood to clot at wounds to stop bleeding and to stop microorganisms getting in
What is a consequence of lack of platelets?
Excessive bleeding and bruising
What is plasma?
A pale straw-coloured liquid that carries everything in blood
What does plasma carry?
1. Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
2. Nutrients like glucose and amino acids absorbed from the gut to the cells of the body
3. Carbon dioxide from the organs to the lungs
4. Urea from the liver to the kidneys
5. Hormones
6. Antibodies and antitoxins produced by white blood cells
