Explain how carbon particulates get into the air by the combustion of fuels in motor vehicles.... this is 3 marks

Fuels are hydrocarbons meaning they contain carbon and so when insufficient oxygen is available carbon particulates formed instead of carbon dioxide because the carbon does not react with oxygen.

Try answering this exam question and check using mark scheme on other side

What two chemicals does nitrogen dioxide react with to form acid rain

Oxygen and water

Why would one polymer be more crystalline from another polymer dépité the fact that they are made using the same monomers? (4 reasons)

Chains could be longer therefore they need more energy to separate

Molecules have more cross links therefore much force is needed to slide chains past each other

Molecules could be packed more tightly so the polymer will be harder because molecules are packed closer

Chains have a stronger attraction to each other therefore more energy is needed to separate the bonds and the polymer will have a higher melting point

What are the advantages of using plastic instead of wood for making rulers? (Give 2 reasons)

Because Plastics are easy to mould and they can be coloured and made transparent furthermore they're more flexible and do not rot

State one example of the use of nanoparticles to improve the properties of a product and explain how it improves this product

Nanoparticles can be used in sports equipment or socks as they have antibacterial properties

They can be used in suncream is nanoparticles are able to repel ultra violet rays

How can salt deposits form in one place yet be found somewhere completely different

The sea erodes salt of rocks making it contain salt therefore when it evaporates, it leaves salt deposits behind. Tectonic plates are able to move continents so a place that was once near the equator could move up north that's why the salt deposits are found elsewhere.

Why was the LeBlanc process invented and explain how it works?

It was invented to make the alkali sodium carbonate on a large scale.

Sodium chloride reacts with sulfuric acid before being heated with charcoal and limestone.

Why was the LeBlanc process very polluting

Suicide acid is a strong acid that harms living things therefore the use of that is dangerous.

Furthermore, the process released huge volumes of hydrogen chloride gas into the air that was acidic and so wrecked the surrounding land. It also produce large amounts of solid waste that released their toxic gas called hydrogen sulfide (smells like rotten eggs)

What's 1 harmful side effect of chlorination of water

The chlorine reacts with the organic materials to produce trihalomethanes (THM's) which MAY cause cancer

Chlorine is used to make pesticides

these are sprayed onto crops to reduce damage caused by insect pests

some of these pesticides are harmful to human health and the environment

suggest how the use of chemicals such as pesticides could cause environmental or health problems (6marks)
