1.) Chief Justice Roger B. Taney of the supreme court ruled over this case.


2.) He claimed that Dred Scott was still an enslaved person. He said Scott was not a citizen and had no right to bring a lawsuit. He claimed his residence of free soil did not make him free, and an enslaved person was property. He wrote that congress had no power to prohibit slavery in any territory.
