The Empirical Rule vs. Chebyshev’s Theorem Discuss how the Empirical Rule works and how it relates to the bell curve as illustrated in Figure 3.14 (a). Then, explain Chebyshev’s Theorem and how it is different from the Empirical Rule. Give a specific example of a population with which the Empirical Rule might be most effective and one with which Chebyshev’s Theorem might be most effective. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings. The Empirical Rule is a set of rules about the approximate percentages that are found with 1, 2, and 3 standard deviations of the mean for a normal distribution. However, this is not a mathematical theorem. Thus, the Empirical Rule applies only to the normal distribution, while Chebyshev's Theorem deals with all other real world distributions. The Empirical Rule is stronger than Chebyshev's Theorem, but applies to fewer cases. * About 68.26% of the values lie within one standard deviation of the mean. |
