What was the Bosman Ruling?
--a 1995 European Court of Justice decision concerning freedom of movement for workers, freedom of association and direct effect of article 39[1] (formerly 48) of the EC Treaty.
Who was Bosman?
Bosman was a player in the Jupiler League in Belgium, whose contract had expired in 1990. He wanted to change teams and move to Dunkerque, a French team. However, Dunkerque did not offer his Belgian club RFC Liège enough of a transfer fee, so Liège refused to let him go.
How did the Bosman ruling affect international soccer?
The Bosman Ruling meant a shift in balance of power between clubs and players in favour of players.
--Players can move for free once they are out of contract. --mpact on smaller clubs contracts meaning that larger clubs can snap up players from smaller clubs for free.
-- out of contract players become more highly sought after
