What is Buddhism based off of?
life and teachings of Sidhartha Gautama Shakyamuni
What does Sidhartha Gautama Shakyamuni mean?
Sidhartha = his given name
Gautama = lineage
Shakya[muni]=[wise man]
What is Sidhartha's story?
-was believed to be a great military or religious leader at birth
-his father kept him secluded in a luxurious palace
-father wanted him to be a military leader
-age 20s, he decides he's not happy
-he sneaked out of the palace, saw sick, old, and dead people
- gave everything back to his parents and lived in a forest alone as a truthseeker
-was still not happy
-he was fed each day by a milkmaid
-he sat at the foot of a tree until he discovered the meaning of life
-a spirit appeared and asked him to teach
-he taught for 50 years, died at age 80
-was cremated, his ashes spread to towns and districts where he taught

1. dissatisfaction: only enlightenment can make us permanently happy forever
2. we experience dissatisfaction because human beings have a self-centered attitude
3. remove self-centered attitude
4. do this by following the eightfold path
Noble Eightfold Path?

1. right views - Buddhism is correct
2. right aspirations - want to become enlightened to help others
3. right speech - not to harm others by your speech
4. right conduct - not to harm others by your conduct
5. right livelihood - not to harm others by way of living (earning a living)
6. right effort - to never give up, always strive toward enlightenment
7. right mindfulness - be aware of states of your body & mind
8. right meditation - techniques designed to quiet down and/or purify the mind of negative thought patterns (anger, fear, jealousy) and replace these thoughts with a positive thought pattern
What are the five precepts?
1. do not kill
2. do not steal
3. do not commit adultery
4. do not lie
5. do not become intoxicated
karma
every action brings a reaction either in this lifetime or in another lifetime

-is unavoidable
-may change an outcome (ex: you break your wrist instead of your neck)
