What is a Lophophor? Which Phylum possesses the Lophophorate structure?

A feeding structure that is a retractable ring of tentacles covered with cilia that circulate water to and from the mouth.
P. Bryozoan
How many classes are in Phylum Echinodermata?
5
1. C. Asteroidea (sea stars)
2. C. Crinoidea (sea lillies)
3. C. Echinoidea (urchins)
4. C. Holothuroidea (cucumber
5. C. Ophiuroidea (brittle stars)
What are the 3 major characteristics of Phylum Echinodermata?
1. Penamaerous; secondary radial system (holothuroidea)
2. Endoskeleton calcareous ossicles; collagen
3. WVS derived from coelom.
What is a water vascual system (WVS) and which Phyla contain it?
hydraulic system used by echinoderms, such as starfish and sea urchins, for locomotion, food, waste transportation and respiration.
P. Echinodermata
Name the functions of a WVS
*Respiration (no gills)
*Ammonia transport and diffusion (no excretion system)
*Circulation (especially nutrient transport)
*Locomotion and holding (tube feet)
How do the tube feet of a starfish operate?
Force is conserved and transferred by incompressible fluid closed system (WVS coelomic space).
How does a WVS work?
Water enters the madreporite and flows through the stone canal to the circular ring canal. Water is then separated into five radial canals that branch into ampullae. The ampullae are connected to the tube feet. Contraction of the ampullae causes the podia to stretch as water is brought into them.
Although Echinoderms have pentaradial symmetry, what is the symmetry of the animals they evolved from?
Bilateral
